SMALL-BORE LOW-SPEED MARINE DIESEL ENGINES

Since the last Motor Ship review of this class of engine (in the July 1976 issue), all six manufacturers concerned have made considerable progress in the development of the small-bore low-speed two-stroke engine. In the present review, which is confined (with one slight exception) to engines of up to 2,000 bhp/cylinder (mcr), these developments are discussed in an introduction which deals, inter alia, with the effects of the virtual collapse of the market for very large-bore engines on the market for medium- and small-bore engines. Experience is showing that "bore-cooling" (in which the waterways take the form of patterns of drilled holes through which the coolant circulates vigorously with a high rate of heat transfer) leads to improved reliability, and its use has been extended from the upper parts of the liners to the cylinder heads and piston crowns in Sulzer, Doxford, and MAN engines. Only Mitsubishi has an engine with two-stage turbocharging in service; several makers feel that there is still plenty of scope for development in single-stage charging. The review embraces the following engines, and includes drawings, lists of principal particulars, and brief descriptions of many of them:--(a) B. & W. K-GF and L-GF engines (of up to 670 mm bore). (b) Doxford 670- and 760-mm bore J-type three-cylinder engines, and 580-mm bore 58J and 58JS engines. (c) GMT B600 (600-mm bore) engines. See Abstracts No. 44,333. (d) MAN KSZ B (520-and 700-mm bore) engines and their BL lower-speed versions. (e) Mitsubishi UEC 52/105 D, DS, and E engines, and UEC 52/125E, 60/125E, and 65/135D engines.
