CALCULATION OF THE STABILITY OF RETAINING WALLS WITH INTERACTIVE GRAPHIC EQUIPMENT

CALCUL DE LA STABILITE DES MURS DE SOUTENEMENT A L'AIDE D'UN MATERIEL GRAPHIQUE INTERACTIF

A new application of interactive visual display to soil mechanics problems has been developed by the LCPC. The murscope program described in this article, is a program for calculating retaining wall stability. The use of interactive graphic equipment facilitates a "visual" exchange which starts by showing basic data on the screen and ends with the automatic representation of the simultaneous variations in the three conventional safety coefficients of a retaining wall (resistance to tilting, punching and sliding) as a function of one of the 23 parameters considered. The case studied is one of a wall of any type of geometry, above water level, subjected to active earth pressure occurring in a non-cohesive embankment of variable slope and subjected also to possible external forces and excessive loads. This wall rests on a frictional cohesive subgrade. The quick analysis of the influence of one parameter on the behaviour of the whole structure facilitates a degree of optimization thus supplying data concerning the mass to be retained, the possible causes of disorder or possible remedial measures. /TRRL/
