SURFACINGS IN ASPHALTIC CONCRETE CONTAINING MODIFIED BITUMINOUS BINDERS. LABORATORY STUDY

REVETEMENT EN BETON DE LIANTS HYDROCARBONES MODIFIES--ETUDE DE LABORATOIRE

This report relates the laboratory studies carried out in 1973 and 1974 on 14 modified bituminous binders and one control standard bitumen. 10 contain bitumen, 4 contain tar. Part 1 describes the binders, the nature of admixtures and their preparation in the laboratory, and the tests for which there is no official test procedure. Parts 2 and 3 give the results obtained on bituminous and tar binders. Each part comprises a study of the rheological properties of the binders by means of: the ring and ball test, penetration, fraas brittleness, ductility, adhesion and cohesion tests. The mechanical properties of the mixtures containing the above binders with the same grading formula were investigated: 0/10 continuous asphaltic concrete, semi granular materials containing crushed dioritic elements. Details are given of the different tests conducted: simple compression test at various temperatures and curing conditions, Marshall test, tracking tests. Measurements of the complex modulus were also taken. In part 4, a comparison is made between these materials and the control bitumen, and an attempt is made to relate the modifications in the mechanical properties of the bituminous mixtures to those in the rheological properties of binders. /TRRL/
