SOUND PROPAGATION AT A STREET INTERSECTION IN AN URBAN ENVIRONMENT
A method is derived for the prediction of the sound attenuation obtained in turning a corner at an intersection, in an urban environment. The method is based on a modal description of the sound field in the streets surrounding the intersection. Its predictions are in agreement with the results of model studies, and of a large-scale study, although other effects, which may be only qualitatively predicted by this theory, also have a significant effect on sound levels in some cases. The method requires a knowledge of the "average mode number" of the sound field. Although this parameter may be difficult to predict or measure in practice, the experimental results suggest that it may be quite significant for the prediction of attenuations. /Author/TRRL/
