SOME ANTI-SKID SURFACINGS REVIEWED

Some proprietary methods of maintaining a skid resistant surface as well as surface dressing are briefly reviewed. Spraygrip and shellgrip are a combination of calcined bauxite chippings held in a bitumen extended epoxy resin which can be sprayed onto the carriageway. Slurriten is a slurry seal for lightly trafficked roads; bitupave is a similar material which sets within three minutes of laying. The most popular treatment is by surface dressing which can provide a better skid resistance than hot rolled asphalt. The properties of various kinds of binder are examined; the use of pre-coated chippings means that low viscosity binders are now no longer required. The recommended nominal size of chippings is given for various types of surfaces and traffic conditions. Sources of high PSV materials and their values are given. The properties and advantages of delugrip are briefly discussed. A slurry seal process suitable for high traffic known as claregrip is described. The material which cures in about 20 minutes is a blend of cationic quick-break bituminous emulsion, high psv granite aggregate, silicoe sand and portland cement. /TRRL/
