PENNDOT READY TO TEST CONCRETE SEGMENTAL BRIDGE THAT COULD REPRESENT A MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH TOWARDS ECONOMICAL REPLACEMENTS

A new method of segmented bridge construction that could help solve the current critical problem of obsolete spans on highways is being developed by PennDOT. If the stress and strain tests on an experimental structure are successful, a standardization of single, economical and speedier bridge construction methods would be realized. The objective of PennDOT's research project was the development of reinforced concrete fabricated segments which could be transported to a location site for assembly and then post-tensioned into a highway bridge. Other benefits that are noted include the reduction of expensive construction time. The present method of field building, installation of reinforcing bars, concrete field casting and curing can take about six weeks for the construction of these items for the average bridge.
