THE CLEAN-UP TEST

The Norwegian government has spent less than NKr. 70 million on oil protection equipment over the last 2 years. Some of this equipment was put to a rather minor test the week of the bravo oil spill early in May. The government learned that the few kilometers of booms and the handful of skimmers available were designed for other than North Sea conditions. The Nofi boom, the one most used during the Bravo leakage, is based on the combination of the bottom tension principles with the correct buoyancy. The marketing company is satisfied with its performance during the Ekofisk accident. The Framo skimmer has been the subject of most positive comment after the Bravo incident. It functioned satisfactorily at all stages, and was the only equipment so far given approval as meeting the existing requirements for the North Sea. The recovery unit utilizes a new combination of adhesion and weir skimming principles. Other equipment used to Ekofisk during the clean up operation are the Troliboom, the BP Vikoma Sea Pack, the Sjuntorp boom, the Expandi Mini boom, the Flema boom, and the BP Vikoma Sea skimmer. Their features and effectiveness are discussed.
