AUTOMATION OF RUDDER DESIGN SYSTEMS BY TWO-STEP STYLE
The authors have tried to automate the design of G-type rudder and developed a design system for the automation including scantling calculation according to the rules of classification societies, weight calculation of each part, stress calculation of rudder stock and rudder plates, and at present are in process of improvement and extension of the system, such as its application to production. In this system, special emphasis is laid on convenience of the user. Consequently, it has been made possible to reduce the input as little as possible and obtain a highly perfected drawing (output). In addition, a so-called "two-step method" is provided whereby it enables the designer to check and modify the design in the course of computerized designing. This system has widely been applied to vessels ranging in size from 20,000 to 200,000 DWT and fully confirmed to be of great value in practical uses. Good results are also obtained in the economy of man-hours required for the design.
