SAFETY: THE VIEW FROM NHTSA
The NHTSA has given the highest priority for improving vehicle occupant safety which reduces the effect of frontal crashes-which produce more fatalities and injuries than all other crashes combined. However, crashes invovling side impacts account for 30 percent of vehicle occupant fatalities. The Administration is exploring improved vehicle flank construction which will reduce side intrusion and provide improved cushioning of vehicles occupants. The new fuel economy standards will force a redesign of passenger cars affecting size, horesepower, performance and even basic technology. Electronics will facilitate the adoption of new systems such as a new 3-way exhaust catalyst as well as improved vehicle diagnostics. Comments are made on the problem of motorcyclist and bicyclist casualties, and on the popularity of multipurpose passenger vehicles which are currently subject to less stringent Federal standards than automobiles.
