AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS II: THE MICROPROCESSOR IS IN
The use of microprocessor integrated circuits as sophisticated control elements could help bridge the gap between conflicting government regulations and consumer demands. The challenges that must be met before the microcomputer can find its role in an automobile are noted, and comments are made on the choice of general-purpose or dedicated units. In the first phase of applications, one or 2 control processors will be used, and later, the trend may be toward distributed processing in which a small number of semiautonomous satellite microcomputers will be placed in various parts of the automobile. The customization of electronic systems and the definition of system requirements is discussed. Engine control concepts are discussed and a graphic representation is given of the kind of engine-management controller that may soon be possible. Comments are made on the signal interchange between chips and on the timing requirements needed to process engine-control results. The software aspects are covered as well as microcomputer production aspects.
