AUTOMOTIVE ELECTRONICS I: SMALLER AND BETTER
The major areas of activity in the application of electronics to automobiles are those related to engine control for improving fuel economy and reducing exhaust emissions. Closed-loop engine-control systems may be used on both electronic and fuel-injected and carbureted engines if a 3-way catalyst is also used. The Delco-Remy MISAR system (Microprocessed Sensing and Automatic Regulation) controls spark timing for all conditions of land and speed consistent with driveability and emissions-control requirements. A closed-loop knock-limiting system is also described. An automotive display center that provides the driver with digital readout of trip data, fuel-consumption information and limited engine performance is outlines as well as other advance developments such as the automatic braking systems and the Critical Task Tracker (detects and inhibits the operation of a vehicle by an impaired driver). Examples of the above systems introduced by Chrysler, Ford and General Motors are described.
