CORRELATION OF LONGITUDINAL WAVE PROFILES AND THE WAVE RESISTANCE OF A SHIP MODEL, WITH A PROPOSED LOCAL-DISTURBANCE CORRECTION

The dissertation is presented in two parts: 1. The first provides the derivations of six different wave resistance expressions in terms of six correlation functions generated from three wave components along a longitudinal cut parallel to the ships track. To demonstrate the numerical accuracy of these wave resistance expressions, the analysis has been applied to the theoretical wave profiles generated by a submerged point dipole for all the six cases. Also, the analysis in terms of the longitudinal wave height has been applied to the measured experimental wave height profiles obtained for the mathematical model C-201. 2. The second, which treats the main objective of the research, presents a method of dealing with the local disturbances of a given ship hull. By doing so, a better agreement among the wave resistances based on wave profiles measured along several longitudinal cuts at small lateral distances has been achieved. What is more, the error introduced to the wave resistance based on the measured total wave profile without subtracting the local wave profile of the mathematical model C-201 was found to be only a small percentage of the total wave resistance. Further investigations needed for dealing with the correlation functions in the wave resistance calculation and the hull form changes in the local disturbance correction have also been discussed.
