A NEW AND SIMPLE PENETRATION PRESSURE METER

The authors describe a rapid and simple method to evaluate Young's modulus and the shear strength of soft clays. The apparatus is made from an 18 inch length of plastic fire hose of the type which goes flat when deflated. Both ends are sealed by clamps around circular end plates, the top is connected to a foot pump via a non return valve. The pressure is noted after each stroke of the pump. "no load" characteristics are determined by inflating the bag under about 3 ft of water. Pressure is then recorded in a similar manner at 2 ft depth intervals as the bag is pushed through the ground. Results from the meter show good agreement with measurements made by other methods at a site on the thames estuary. Formulae are given for the calculation of Young's modulus from pressure meter settings. The authors conclude that although there must be some remoulding of the soil below the point where the pressure meter has been pushed into the soil, the volume affected is insignificant compared with that stressed under test. /TRRL/
