TOWARDS APPROPRIATE METRIC UNITS FOR GROUTING

The selection of appropriate metric units are discussed in this article and are primarily oriented to large-scale use of cement grouting, such as in the foundation of dams, because of the preponderance of this type of work in grouting activities. Quantity measurements are necessary several times during gouting operations. Some engineers make these measurements in volume units, weight, or a mixture of the two. A variety of units is also used around the world for measuring the amount of grout injected, or the quantity of solids in that grout. There is a real need for an effort on an international scale to reduce the variety of units to a workable minimum. The choice of units is influenced by individual grouting practioner's preferences, the country in which he is operating, and also by the type of grout. Because of the difficulty in standardization, the most profitable approach is the clarification of the issue as to when volume units are the most suitable, and when weight units are. A consistent system is recommended when making measurements for using criteria for changing mixes, and for assessing the effectiveness of the grouting and the need for further grouting. In large scale cement grouting operations volume measurements are unavoidable and accuracy is relatively unimportant. Some practical reasons for the use of volume rather than weight on these large jobs are presented. Pressures during grouting and water testing have to be carefully controlled and frequently adjusted. The "lugeon" unit is widely accepted as a standard permeability unit for grouting. It is essentially a metric unit and is primarily devised for, and used with, grouting and is well suited to use at all stages of grouting.
