METHOD OF CALCULATING LONG-TERM CREEP SETTLEMENTS-DISCUSSION

Some results and observations of a recent study carried out on a marine clay for evaluating the effect of stress ratio and stress path on the drained creep rates are described. This study was conducted on unsedimented samples of a soft Indian marine clay that was anistropically consolidated along the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (Ko) line before shearing along a number of stress paths in four equal increaments. Also, from a study on lightly overcosolidated samples and from the results of a special conventional drained test conducted on a 20-day aged sample of marine clay, it has been shown that there is a considerable reduction of drained creep rates for an aged sample. In general, a very good agreement between measured and predicted creep has been observed. It is further suggested by the discussors that the creep settlement rate for a footing problem can be obtained by integrating the drained creep rates over the entire thickness of the layer.
