STRESS DISTRIBUTION FOR HEAVY EMBEDDED STRUCTURES-DISCUSSION
Calculation of the stress increment in a soil mass is an important step in settlement analysis. Although may well-known elastic solutions are used for calculating the stress increments because of their simplicity, widely used solutions such as Boussinesqor Westergaard, are based on the assumptions of surface loading and semi-infinite medium. It is suggested that for cases in which the ratio of the foundation width to the depth of soil profile is large, the use of the Westergaard-Mindlin solution will underestimate the stress increment and settlement because the rigid base effect is not properly considered. Since there is no readily available solution for the calculation of stress distribution that will take into account both embedment and rigid base effects, the discussors suggest that for a shallow soil profile where the rigid base can be important, one may use the surface Westergaard solution to obtain conservative settlement predictions. If the stress distribution theories were used indiscriminately, the difference in settlement predictions could be as much as 34%.
