EFFECTIVE APPLICATION OF THE SEISMIC REFRACTION METHOD TO HIGHWAY ENGINEERING PROJECTS
The seismic refraction method has application in a variety of highway engineering problems where low cost information on depths and strengths of near surface rock materials is required. However, it is our belief that the seismic refraction method is not well understood by the majority of the engineering profession. In the past this has led to misuse of the method, large errors in interpretation and erroneous assessments of site conditions. The aim of this paper is to establish the basic features of the shallow seismic refraction method and its effective application in highway engineering projects. Included are comparisons of available equipment, recommended field procedures and interpretation techniques, an outline of the problems in interpretation and a discussion on the compatibility between seismic information and that obtained using other site investigation techniques. An example of a characteristic refraction record and a relevant worked example are also provided. /Author/TRRL/
