THE RESPONSE OF A BITUMINIOUS MIXTURE AT FAILURE TO DIFFERENT LOADING CONDITIONS

This paper deals with a laboratory study in which the flexural strength of a sheet asphalt mixture under different loading conditions such as creep, constant rate of deflection and repetitive load testing is compared. The magnitude of the plastic deflection as defined by the product of the rate of deflection and the time of rupture was found to be almost a constant in all the three tests, even though the load and rupture time values varied significantly. Using this material property constant as obtained from the creep tests, an attempt was made to predict its rupture strength in the constant rate of deflection test and the number of repetitions to failure in the fatigue test. These values were then compared with those obtained experimentally. These values were closer in the constant rate of deflection test than in the case of the repetitive load tests. This was attributed to dynamic effects. By using this invariant property of the material, an attempt in the form of a 'damage concept' was made to define the damage done to a specimen at any time during testing. /Author/TRRL/
