STUDIES ON PRESTRESSED CONCRETE I-BEAMS IN COMBINED TORSION, BENDING AND SHEAR
In part I, the results of tests on 22 prestressed I-Beams are reported. Most of these beams were tested in combined bending and torsion, but four beams also carried shear. In part II, strength theories are developed for prestressed I-Beams in torsion, both those with transverse reinforcement linking the flanges to the stem and also those without such reinforcement. In part III, the theory is compared with test data and also with the provisions of the Australian code as 1481-1974. It is concluded that transverse flange reinforcement contributed significantly to the strength of an I-Beam in torsion. With such reinforcement, the flanges enhance the strength of the stem alone. Without such reinforcement the flanges add little strength and may even be detrimental in some cases. The likelihood of mode 2 failures in rectangular beams in torsion is also commented upon. /Author/TRRL/
