LIGHT FOUNDATION ROADS IN RURAL AREAS
The article reviews the development of rural road design and construction in the Republic of South Africa. Such roads include feeder roads of the farm-to-market type between the homelands and decentralized industrial areas. The development and future requirements of roads in this category are discussed with reference to traffic conditions, geometric layout, material standards, construction methods and costs. Details are also given of light-foundation gravel road design and construction for which an investigation, intended to gather information leading to eventual design standardization, has been completed by the CSIR in South Africa. /TRRL/
