ASPHALTIC MIXING PLANTS

PLANTAS DE AGLOMERADOS ASFALTICOS

A description is given of new types of asphaltic mixing plants which differ from the classical types and which are found principally in the U.S.A. The main characteristics of the following types are given: McConnaghy and Wibau using chemical additives to improve adhesion of matrix to aggregate, the proportioning of the cold material has to be precise, as no further check on the percentage is available, the inert atmosphere in the mixer prevents oxidation of the asphalt. The Boeing type introduces bitumen and aggregates simultaneously into the mixer, both being electronically controlled. Other makes include Barber-Greene, CMI, Stansteel, Cedar-Rapids and Aztec. Comparative tests on similar models indicate that capital cost, running cost (lower consumption of bitumen) and maintenance costs are lower for the new types than for the classical types. /TRRL/
