MANUFACTURE OF CONCRETE BLOCKS FROM BY-PRODUCTS OF POWER STATIONS

FABRICATION DE BLOCS DE BETON A PARTIR DES DECHETS DES CENTRALES ELECTRIQUES

Various by-products are derived from the desulphurization of the smoke of power stations using coal. Their nature varies according to the desulphurization method used, thus their employment must be the object of a careful study of the environment. By-products obtained by means of the bischoff method are investigated. The results of the investigation show that they can be used as concrete aggregates. An attempt was made to use the largest number possible of by-products and dust obtained in the melting chamber of power stations. The first objective was to obtain a bn 150 type of concrete complying with din 1045. It appeared that the concrete mix required large quantities of water because of its high fines content (70% smaller than or equal to 60 mu M) and of the presence of calcium due to the by-products. The water/cement ratio was thus high and the compressive strength reduced. A series of tests showed which parameters influenced concrete quality, and a formula, which takes these parameters into account, was developed. The quality of the concrete was greatly improved: pavement units were tested under commercial conditions and a compressive strength of 500 kg/square centimetre at 28 days was observed. Because of the latent hydraulic properties of these aggregates, a later increase in compressive strength can be expected. This was confirmed by some test results. /TRRL/
