COLD MASTIC ASPHALT FOR BRIDGE DECKS

MASTIC EN FRIO PARA TABLEROS DE PUENTES.

The results presented were obtained during the sealing of a number of concrete bridge decks with cold mastic asphalt composed as follows: fine sand, large quantity of good quality filler, low proportion (2.4%) of asbestos powder and over-stabilised anionic emulsion (22%/30%). The proportioning of the ingredients is carried out by weight, the spreading on the deck is done with a brush and rubber guide ruler, with the application of a bituminous emulsion eal-1 serving as a pulverised surface dressing. The laboratory tests on the mastic are described: cone penetration test; creep on an inclined plane; absorption of water and strength after immersion; compression tests; abrasion after immersion and permeability. Decks built with this material on Spanish bridges are listed.
