A NEW DIMENSION IN SOIL TESTING

A description is given of a piece of equipment originally developed as a portable consolidation testing machine but which has now been adapted to carry out a full range of triaxial tests. The "tricon" now commercially available, is said to have retained the compactness & portability of the early piece of equipment constructed for simple tests on undisturbed specimens of shrinking and swelling clays, but its capability has been extended to include routine one-dimensional consolidation tests and a full range of undrained and drained triaxial tests. Loads may be applied by hand or by motors driven by hand or by motors driven by battery or mains. It is a multi-use machine equally at home in a central laboratory or the back of a land rover. /TRRL/
