A FALLING HEAD AIR PERMEAMETER FOR TESTING ASPHALT

Permeability is an important parameter of bituminous mix design since it is an indicator of void content, and controls the rate of passage of air, vapour or water. This note describes and illustrates an apparatus and procedure in which the air permeability of a confined specimen is measured in terms of the time taken for the fall, by a predetermined amount, of the upstream pressure in an inflated seepage air reservoir. The pressure drop level can be selected so that the time taken does not exceed 60 S. Three measurements on a single specimen can then be carried out in four to five minutes, including setting-up time. An appendix contains the expressions used for calculating the air permeability. This note describes a laboratory apparatus, but the principle may easily be applied to a field air permeameter. /TRRL/
