NEW DESIGN RULES FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL WORKS FOR ROAD BRIDGES IN AUSTRALIA

The NAASRA design specification for road bridges in Australia has recently been completely revised. The authors were members of a NAASRA sub-committee which was reponsible for revising the design rules for steel bridges, including those with composite steel and concrete superstructures. The new rules are contained in section 7 of the revised (1975) NAASRA bridge design specification, and cover the design of structural steelwork in road bridges of the type commonly built throughout Australia at present. This paper gives some of the fundamental concepts adopted by the sub-committee, the origins of various rules and the reasons for including them. Comparisons are also made with the equivalent design rules for buildings contained in as 1250 SAA steel structures code. /TRRL/
