REPRESENTATIONS OF THE VELOCITY POTENTIAL IN THE THEORY OF WAVE RESISTANCE OF SHIPS
The Inui-Kelvin problem is presented for the theory of wave resistance of ships. The problem consists of the determination of the velocity potential satisfying the linearized boundary condition on the free-surface on the basis of the double-body potential. The solutions of this problem are shown to have a variety of representations and the relations among them are indicated. Also, the relations among the Inui-Kelvin solutions, the Michell-Havelock approximation, and the Inui representation are discussed. It is pointed out that to improve the poor agreement of the theory of wave resistance with the experimental data, it is important to investigate which is valid among the Inui-Kelvin solutions.
