CRYOGENIC TANKER OPERATION IN THE NORTHWEST PACIFIC
This paper reviews approximately six and one-half years of experience gained in the operation of two LNG ships, the S. S. Polar Alaska and S.S. Arctic Tokyo. Since the first loading in October of 1969, the two ships have delivered over 200 cargos to the Negishi Terminal of Tokyo Gas Company near Yokohama, Japan. The route over which these ships must steam takes them through climatic variations from - 45 degree C to + 35 degree C, areas where navigational aids are minimal or non-existent, tidal changes that exceed 30 feet, ice pans three to six feet thick and an acre in size moving at a speed of 8 knots, and ship traffic so dense that an escort vessel is required and ship movement is restricted to daylight hours and good visibility. The above conditions have generated many problems for the ships and the crews and have provided Marathon Oil Company, the coordinator of the shipping operation, with valuable LNG shipping experience.
