METHODS FOR REDUCING FIT-UP WORK IN HULL CONSTRUCTION
This is an abridged version of a paper presented by the Author at a symposium held by the Wilhelm Pieck University, Rostock, in 1976. An excessive amount of rectification work, and of fit-up work in particular, will adversely affect shipyard production. There is a three-part solution to this problem: (i) Improved accuracy in the earlier stages of production, (ii) Reduced stringency in accuracy requirements (there is only limited scope for this), and (iii) Rationalization of fit-up work. The article briefly discusses the problem, mentions its financial implications, and summarises methods of achieving each of the three objectives contributing to its solution.
