WELDING ECONOMICS: SOME BASIC PRACTICAL ASPECTS
In the design of any component or fabrication there are three fundamentals which must be considered, namely: 1) Efficiency: The component must be strong enough to carry the loads imposed on it is service. 2) Cost: Firstly, the component should be designed for welding (in this case arc welding), this is very important. Secondly, the minimum weld metal should be deposited consistent with obtaining sufficient strength. Thirdly, deposit the minimum weld metal at the highest current (deposition rate), so completing the component in the shortest time. Some costs are worked out on the basis of labour rate and consumable cost. 3) Appearance: This is important only if the component to be welded is open to view. Welding procedure is also beiefly considered.
