LEAN CONCRETE BASE
This paper describes the Lean Concrete Base which was substituted by Contract Modification Order for Cement-Treated Base on a 10.5 mile Portland Cement Concrete paving project on Interstate 70 in western Colorado. The reasons for the substitution are described, along with the mix design and specifications for the Lean Concrete Base, construction methods, and quality control procedures. The advantages of Lean Concrete Base over Cement-Treated Base, as evidenced on this project, are discussed. It is concluded by the authors, based on their experience on this project, that Lean Concrete Base is an economical alternate to be considered in the design of any future Portland Cement Concrete paving project.
