DYNAMIC CRUSHING OF STRAIN RATE SENSITIVE BOX COLUMNS

An approximate analysis was presented from which dynamic strength and energy absorption of axially loaded thin-walled box columns can be determined. The dynamic compressive force is a product of a static crushing strength of the column and a strain rate correction factor. The static crushing strength was shown to be proportional to the static yield stress and the square of the wall thickness as well as being dependent on the ratios of a longer to shorter side of a rectangular section. A good correlation of the load-deflection relationship and mean static crushing strength with experiments was obtained provided the effect of strain-hardening is properly taken care of.
