VOIDS IN CURRENT MARITIME TECHNOLOGY, TRAINING AND THE COST OF PLAYING IT SAFE

The paper discusses partial and total losses by nationality for 19 major shipping countries, and shows how the number of vessels and seamen has declined since 1952 while at the same time the tonnage has doubled. Detailed figures on manning of the "UK" Merchant Marine are given (1948-72). The recruiting problem is discussed, and the impact of technology is considered.
