SIGNING TO IMPROVE TRAFFIC FLOW AT ADDED-LANE ENTRANCE RAMPS
An attempt was made to provide a positive information system for the ramp motorists and to evaluate its effects. Signs were fabricated and erected along the ramp to provide the motorist with pertinent information regarding the nature of the roadway ahead and the response expected from the driver. Spot speeds and volume counts were taken before and after signs were put up, and the data was analyzed to determine if any statistically significant differences existed. It was found that a significant increase in volume rates was achieved after an information system was provided for the entrance ramp motorists. The variance in speeds dropped significantly after installation of the signs. The increased volumes were directly related to the more uniform flows.
