ENGINES FOR ROAD VEHICLES
MOTORER FOER VAEGFORDON
This report is a step towards providing basic information about new types of engine and contains state-of-the-art discussions for various basic types of engine. As an introduction, the theory of heat engines is reviewed briefly. Classification of heat engines and automotive fuels is also discussed. The report deals primarily with the following types of engine: (1) the Rankine engine (steam), (2) the Wankel rotary engine, (3) the Stirling engine, (4) the Brayton engine (gas turbine), (5) Stratified charge engines and other modified engines based on the Otto and diesel cycle and (6) electric and hybrid systems are discussed briefly. In discussing each basic type of engine the essential steps of its evolution are presented. Then follows a general review of their present technical development. Summarizing advantages and disadvantages, their future potential development is suggested. The following factors are then discussed from the technical and the economical standpoint: thermal efficiency and fuel consumption, torque characteristics, price per power unit, weight/power ratio, multifuel capacity, exhaust gas quality (emissions). Finally the characteristic features which must be considered in an evaluation process are summarized and discussed. /TRRL/
