BEHAVIOUR OF ATCHAFALAYA LEVEES DURING CONSTRUCTION

Three instrumented sections were built along the Atchafalaya flood protection levees in Southern Louisiana on soft creep-susceptible highly plastic clay. Available analytical techniques were used to achieve an understanding of the observed behaviour of the Atchafalaya test sections during and shortly after construction and to develop modelling techniques for the evaluation of alternative designs. The characteristic behaviour of the test sections was identified and successfully modelled by finite element stress and deformation analyses and by stability analyses. Measured pore pressures agreed well with those calculated, but pore pressure analyses gave little insight into test section behaviour. Careful analysis of the foundation soil profile was an important factor in the success of the investigation. The usefulness of the methods of analysis was evaluated and different methods of stability analysis compared. /TRRL/
