A BASIS FOR THE DESIGN OF COLUMN BRACING

The article gives a number of non-dimensional design charts intended to allow the estimation of critical loads of interbraced compression members and also the strength requirements of the members. The charts summarise the results of calculations on structures comprising up to six compression members in parallel linked by up to twelve lines of braces. Uniform and "parabolic" axial force distributions within the column length are considered. The analytical method used is described as a normal stiffness matrix formulation using stability functions to incorporate the weakening effect of axial compression. /TRRL/
