DESIGN CODES FOR STEEL BOX GIRDERS

Box girders have been used extensively in steel structures for many years, in particular for bridges in the u.k. And Europe. The several collapses of steel box girder bridges which occurred between November 1969 and November 1971 resulted in a great deal of research into the subject and the review of design methods and procedures in several countries, especially the u.k. The work undertaken overseas is of particular interest since it includes extensive parametric studies to examine the results of the research and the processing of the information into a usable design form. In view of these advances in the state-of-the-art with respect to box girder bridges it is felt that there would be some advantage in reviewing the situation in Australia. In reviewing existing codes or in drafting a new design code for steel box girders it is necessary to consider the views of the researcher, the designer and the fabricator. This paper is intended to put forward the designer's views on certain aspects. /TRRL/
