RUBBER/WIRE-CORD ADHESION TESTS. PART 2 - DYNAMIC. THE DUNLOP MULTICORD TEST

The multicord test provides a dynamic measurement of the resistance to adhesion failure in a rubber/steel-cord composite testpiece which is subjected to cycles of compression and relaxation. The conditions applied simulate those experienced by tyres in service, and allow laboratory assessment to be made on an accelerated time-scale. The testpiece comprises one compound embedding six cords. Tread-bars are positioned on two opposite faces of the testpiece in a direction normal to the cords. A transfer-moulding technique enables high dimensional uniformity to be achieved. Adhesion failure is detected during testing by observing changes in the electrical resistance of the steel cords. Multicord test data are influenced by factors such as variations in testing load and temperature, and changes in compound, cure and cord construction. The bonded life up to the onset of failure depends both on adhesion itself and on the effects of these other factors on the application of shear strain at the bond interface. The multicord dynamic adhesion test can provide a useful assessment of potential tyre performance. /Author/TRRL/
