ROAD MATERIALS AND BRIDGE CONSTRUCTION DEVELOPMENTS IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA. EXPERIMENTS WITH ARTIFICIAL AGGREGATE AND RUBBERISED ASPHALT
Results from experiments show that the heat and light reflecting properties of aggregates are similar. An expression is given for the relation between maximum temperature in the binder and the luminance factor of an aggregate. A nuclear meter has been used to study the compaction of hot asphalt with limited success. Bitumen coated piles have been used at bridge abutments to reduce the load transferred from the compacted embankments. The properties of an artificial aggregate consisting of clay, limestone, whiting and silica with particles of calcined bauxite are described. A study of superplasticisers to improve concrete workability is described. Measurements have shown that the density of the treated concrete was slightly higher. A comparison is made of the properties and cost of pavements marking materials. Some thermoplastic materials have been used for intersection markings. Preliminary results from field experiments undertaken to investigate the efficiency of a rubberised surface seal coating in waterproofing cracked pavements are described. Rubber buffings from tyre retreading plants are added to the hot bitumen just before spraying. Other items discussed include high yield strength steel girder flanges and the design and construction of the Yarra Bridge. /TRRL/
