RESURFACING BLACKWALL TUNNEL EXIT
Rutting of up to 100mm in depth appeared to be due to the inability of the BS594 rolled asphalt base and wearing course to stand up to the heavy traffic crawling its way up the incline from the tunnel. Resurfacing was carried out with materials found to be resistant to deformation by results from a series of trial sections laid on the southern entrance to the tunnel. Results given show that a high blown grade of bitumen R85/40 gave the best results when compared to conventional materials. A stable base course of 70 per cent coarse aggregate rolled asphalt to BS 594/61 was also recommended. The grading limits for the coarse aggregate was substantially narrowed. To obtain a continuous grading curve, pit sand was used for the fine aggregate. Care was taken to control the temperature during laying and compaction was applied as soon as possible. The new surfacing has not deformed significantly during the last two hot summers. /TRRL/
