RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE SPECIFICATION AND USE OF READY MIXED CONCRETE FOR CAST IN PLACE PILING

The technical memorandum applies to piles using temporary steel lining tubes to support unstable strata, to piles using bentonite suspension subsequently displaced by concrete, and to piles where a tube is driven or inserted and subsequently filled with high workability concrete. The design requirements of concrete for cast in place piles are considered. High workability is of paramount importance. Other important features are described, and methods of providing the correct strength are given. The use of a tremie pipe in cases where it is not possible to dewater the bore or casing is illustrated. Recommended limits of workability are given with examples of typical conditions of use for each mix. A BRMCA enquiry form is included in appendix 1 which should be used to specify readymixed concrete for cast in place piling. This form gives details of the concrete quality, aggregate, cement and workability, ensuring close cooperation between the purchaser and a continuous supply of concrete once the construction has begun. /TRRL/
