OUR PRIMARY ENERGY SOURCES AND THE FUELS MADE FROM THEM
We have become accustomed to the fuels and goods provided by "the complete barrel of oil", and it may seem difficult at first to find suitable replacements. Yet most of these products can be made from coal (peat, lignite), biomass, or even from nuclear energy using processes known at present. In particular methanol is an environmentally attractive fuel, which leads to many other products including petrol. For less critical applications, slurry fuels offer particular advantages for storage and transport. In redesigning our society around synthetic fuels, it is desirable to match the scale of production to various primary energy sources being used. A number of factors are discussed in this paper, which will determine the optimum size of synthtic fuel plant. /TRRL/
