THE RESILIENT BEHAVIOUR OF A GRANULAR MATERIAL UNDER REPEATED LOADING

A well-graded crushed limestone extensively used for road-base and sub-base in Great Britain was tested in a large triaxial apparatus. The aim of the project was to measure the strains occurring in samples of the material subjected to a wide range of stresses broadly in line with those expected to occur in a pavement structure due to traffic loading. Resilient strain tests were performed in which a few cycles of load only were applied at each stress condition in order to measure the resilient response of the material without subjecting it to large permanent strains. The results show that the primary factors influencing the resilient strain in the material are the normal stress and the ratio of deviator stress to normal stress. Further tests were carried out in which the resilient behaviour of the material was measured after a large number of load cycles had been applied to the material and the results of these tests showed that permanent strain causes some anisotropy in resilient behaviour. A model for the resilient stress-strain behaviour of the material is proposed and its implications for pavement design are discussed. /Author/TRRL/
