DETECTION OF IMPORTANT INTERACTIONS AMONG FACTORS - A USEFUL TECHNIQUE FOR TRAFFIC SAFETY RESEARCH
In order to rationally apply countermeasures to a particular type of crash, one needs to know the characteristics of this crash type which differ from those of other crashes. The way in which these characteristics interact is of particular interest. This paper is concerned with the application of the computer program aid (automatic interaction detector) to the problem of identifying these characteristics for further study. The principles of aid are briefly discussed. Aid is applied to 1973 fatal crash data for New South Wales, in order to examine the particular characteristics of fatal pole crashes. To check the stability of the 1973 results, aid is also applied to 1974 fatal crash data. Contrasts and comparisons are made between the results for each year. The main conclusion which is reached is that fatal pole crashes are over-represented on bends in urban areas. The uses and limitations of the application of aid to traffic safety research are discussed. /TRRL/
