BRIDGE DESIGN CRITERIA

Limit state design principles can be rationally applied to bridges, provided that the appropriate limit states are considered. The limit state of incremental collapse provides a rational basis for accommodating the effect of repeated maximum loads. A simple method of assessing the incremental collapse limit is given, based upon collapse mechanisms and a correct envelope of elastic response of the structure to all load cases. A maximum working stress criterion becomes superfluous in the limit state context, but a correct and detailed elastic analysis is necessary. Potential cost savings exist in the design of new bridges and in the evaluation of existing bridges considered to be substandard. /TRRL/
