FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED IN THE DRAFTING OF COMPACTION SPECIFICATIONS FOR SOIL

The paper begins by outlining the principal modes of failure encountered in highway pavements. It is then demonstrated that it is possible to define optimal sets of compaction conditions which minimise the probability of each of these types of failure occurring. Practical limits are placed on the densities and moisture contents to be permitted during compaction if an optimal response of a pavement material is to be achieved. Improvements to current compaction practice are suggested. /TRRL/
