EXPERIMENTAL ELECTRIC CAR USING AN INDUCTION MOTOR DRIVE

The paper describes an experimental electric car which was fitted with a cage induction motor drive system. The operating principles of an induction motor fed by a variable frequency and voltage source are discussed. Various methods of controlling the motor are discussed and it is concluded that slip frequency control provides the best operating characteristics. The dc-ac inverter together with its electronic control system are described in detail. Regenerative braking is available over most of the operating range and transition between driving and braking modes involves no discontinuity. Several performance tests were carried out on the drive system both in the laboratory and in the vehicle. These results confirm the predicted performance of the drive system. (A) /TRRL/
