DEVELOPMENTS IN THE DESIGN OF BITUMINOUS PLANT MIXES
The development of the design of bituminous plant mix paving materials in Australia is outlined and the properties required of this material to meet modern traffic conditions are indicated. The durability of the dense bituminous concrete (bc) currently used depends too much on good compaction at the time of construction and by subsequent trafficking to be suitable as an all-purpose surfacing material. Special designs of dense hot mix are needed for lightly trafficked sites. Modifications of the gap-graded stone-filled sheet asphalt used in the U.K. promise to give a more durable material than bc for most traffic conditions. Lees' (1970) procedures for designing maximum density fuller curves, and their possible application to the design of both gap-graded and continuous-graded dense hot mix, and to friction courses for high speed sites, is discussed.
