SEASONAL VARIATION IN FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT DEFLECTIONS IN SOUTH WESTERN AND NORTH EASTERN NEW SOUTH WALES

A programme of measuring pavement deflections using the Benkelman beam has been carried out since June, 1973 at four sites in south western N.S.W. And since January, 1972 at three sites in north eastern N.S.W. The results have been analysed in an attempt to correlate seasonal variations in pavement deflections, and hence pavement strength, with the climatic factors of rainfall and evaporation. A correlation was evident at the sites in south western N.S.W. However, although there were significant variations in deflections with time at the sites in north eastern N.S.W. no correlation with rainfall and evaporation is evident from the data presented. An indication of the magnitude of the likely seasonal variations in the deflections of flexible pavements is also given. /Author/TRRL/
